Hello HbIS 6th-8th Grade Families,

Hello HbIS 6th-8th Grade Families,

We recently discovered some of the elective choices that were posted on our HbIS webpage and that we emailed out to you are actually for high school students. We apologize for any confusion but, we are excited to share the options we do have! Below are five options for your child’s elective choice. Please read through the description of each course and choose ONE. These electives will run through the trimester and once we begin the second trimester, you will be able to make a new selection at that time. Once you have made your selection, reply back with your elective choice as soon as possible so we can get your child enrolled in their elective and ready to begin on Monday,August 31st.
Thank you,
Shara Hall

Middle School Career Explorations
What career are you best suited for? In this course, students will explore career options in many different fields including business, health science, public administration, the arts, and information technology.
Middle School Health
Middle School Health aids students in creating a foundation of personal health. Beginning with properly defining health, this course then builds upon basic health practices to emphasize the importance of balance. Attention is given to each of the six dimensions of wellness; namely, physical, intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social, and environmental. Students are taught the skills necessary to improve every aspect of health. They are also encouraged to reflect upon their own personal wellness each week.
Middle School Journalism
Who? What? When? Where? Journalism provides us with the answers to these questions for the events that affect our lives. In this course, students will learn how to gather information, organize ideas, format stories for different forms of news media, and edit their stories for publication. The course will also examine the historical development of journalism and the role of journalism in society.
Middle School Photography
“A picture is worth a thousand words.” Photographs play an important role in our world today. We photograph to preserve memories, document events, and create artistic works. This course introduces students to the basics of photography, including camera functions and photo composition. Students will learn what it takes to create a good photograph and how to improve photographs of animals, people, and vacations. They will also begin working with their photographs using photo-editing software. Through a variety of assigned projects, students will engage their creativity by photographing a range of subjects and learning to see the world through the lens of their cameras.
Spanish is the most spoken non-English language in U.S. homes, even among non-Hispanics, according to the Pew Research Center. There are overwhelming cultural, economic, and demographic reasons for students to achieve mastery of Spanish. Spanish 1A and B engage students and use a variety of activities to ensure student engagement and to promote personalized learning. These courses can be delivered completely online, or implemented as blended courses, according to the unique needs of the teacher and the students.

A Day in the Life.  Weekly Calendars and Activity progress
Hello HbIS Families,

Hello HbIS Families,

The Home based Independent Study program is off and running.  The Chromebooks were distributed and Edmentum led us through an informational Zoom meeting.
(If you missed either… Chromebooks can still be checked out at Wheatland Elementary school office during normal business hours, and this email will contain a link to the Zoom meeting.  You can watch or rewatch the session at a time that works for your family!)
Our staff are working to make sure everyone is engaged. If you didn’t attend the zoom or check out a device we will be calling you next week to see if you are still interested in the program.  If you’ve decided to not participate in HbIS this year, please let us know.  (Some families had underestimated the time commitment, are going back to Distance Learning or have chosen to transfer to a different school.)  If you’ve decided to not participate in HbIS this year, please let us know, we’ll be able to fill your spot with one of the families currently on the Wait List.  Thank you for keeping us informed.
If you had a question on the Zoom meeting, we are making calls and answering emails to help get things sorted out.  If you don’t hear back and you’ve got a pressing question you can email us at :
Next Steps:

Coming Up:
When students are assigned a curriculum path- (and we’ll address electives then)- We will need all parents to sign a Personal Learning Plan.  This guarantees we are all in agreement as to the curriculum and pacing.
We have protective covers for the Chromebooks, which we will issue as we receive back the Personal Learning Plans.
One of the Home based Independent Study teachers or staff will be in contact with you soon!
Thank you for your patience and support as we grow this program.  We are proud that the Wheatland School District is able to offer this educational alternative to support our students and families.
